So far Italy has won the World Cup four times, the last one being in the year 2006. This comes at a time when Gian Piero Ventura’s, who’s the head coach, tactics have been questioned by former players and soccer experts from around the world.
Italy dominated and looked strong throughout the game, 76% possession, with Sweden at San Siro in Milan where they managed to get 11 shots on goal but still failed to convert any.
It would have been hell on Italy but the Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz refused to award a penalty to Sweden’s Emil Forsberg. Sweden gave the Italians more chances, but their finishing was not what was expected.
In tears, retiring Gianluigi Buffon,39, said he was “sorry for all of Italian football” and that “It’s a shame my last official game coincided with the failure to qualify for the World Cup.”

In support of their Goal keeper, Juventus twitted and congratulated Buffon for being a pride of his nation. Whereas BBC’s presenter Gary Lineker termed him as a “Mountain of a man”
Other Italy players retiring are Roma midfielder Daniele de Rossi and Buffon’s Juventus team-mate Andrea Barzagli.
It appears Gianluigi Buffon has played his final game for Italy. He will be much missed. A mountain of a man. A Giant of a goalkeeper. A credit to his sport.
