Dancehall e-news and Reviews

Recipient of the Order of Jamaica by the Jamaican government in recognition of his “exceptional and dedicated contribution to the Jamaican music industry”, legendary crooner Beres Hammond has amassed an impressive classic hit filled discography such as with latest single Can’t Stay“.

The latter is yet another single off famed producer Troyton’s True Emotions Riddim. The must have single is now available worldwide on iTunes, Amazon and more via 21st Hapilos Digital.

Artist Spotlight this Week – Protoje

Born in the 80’s but wishing he was birthed in the 60’s, Protoje (Oje Ollivierre) is the fresh face with the freshest lyrical delivery, still having a feel of vintage reggae music but being a suitable update for the present time. Indeed, Marley’s mantra was to “free the people with music.” Protoje’s mantra is to free the people with art. Music – his appointed contribution to the artistic revolution – is only one of the many distinct art forms.

Inna Dub Style

Lila Ike hit the front of the reggae scene by collaborating with Protoje on his Royalty Free EP with the track Flight Plans, and her tune ‘Biggest Fan’ is our dub song of the week.

Video Throwback of the Week

Shabba Ranks – Ting-A-ling

Quick fact: Ranks biggest hit single outside of Jamaica was the reggae fusion smash “Mr. Loverman” (memorable for bringing the cry “Shabba!” to the music world).

Protoje – Kingston Be Wise

Quick Fact: The song “Kingston Be Wise” (a remake of Ini Kamoze‘s song “England be nice”) was featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto V on the in-game “Blue Ark” radio station.
