A Winning Year for Mighty Crown: International Sound Scores New Collabos, Epic Events, Clash Victory, More
New York, New York — December 2016 (Irish and Chin) Popular international sound system Mighty Crown proves that hard work yields infinite benefits. With new collaborations, business launches, music, epic events and sound clash victory, the booming stars of the sound arena have possibly scored one of their most successful years, amidst celebrating their high profile 25th Anniversary. Add media attention to the already blazing mix and you have a “winning” recipe. Much to Mighty Crown’s credit, the December 23 release of a special sneaker collabo with sports apparel giant Le Coq Sportif and Tokyo-based footwear favorite mita sneakers spawns a special limited edition sneaker, which commemorates the sound’s landmark 25th Anniversary.
Emblazoned with the patriotic blue, white and red of the French tricolor on the predominately black leather upper, reggae-centric Japanese sound gurus Mighty Crown and mita put their touches on the limited edition sneaker via bold leopard spots and zebra stripes. This eclectic rendition of the Le Coq Sportif R1000 has sneaker collectors in a frenzy, while paying homage to the sound system through placement of the Mighty Crown 25th Anniversary logo on the insoles. While the sneaker will appear mostly in Japan retail outlets, international orders can be placed online. New sneakers aren’t the only thing on “The Far East Rulaz” collabo list, as December 13 saw the release of the 2 WAY Ruck Sack, a funky bag from Mighty Crown and Porter.
News of the bag release flooded social media, with both a commercial and print advertisement. Members of Mighty Crown donning the 2 WAY Ruck Sack bag in the commercial certainly contributed to the appeal, spawning an onslaught of attention from fans. Also in honor of Mighty Crown’s 25th Anniversary, the hand crafted bag consists of outer fabric denim and red nylon for inner fabric, which neatly represents the color of the Mighty Crown 25th Anniversary patch attached inside. The multipurpose durable bag is a fine product of skillful craftsmanship from Porter. The new bag follows the wave of commemorative releases, which kicked off with a special edition Mighty Crown Anniversary snapback hat from New Era earlier this year.
Music is of course always at the center of Mighty Crown’s mission. Recognized as ambassadors of Reggae and Dancehall music in Japan, the sound is responsible for young Reggae star Chronixx’s first trip to Japan in the Spring, which resulted in a sold-out mini-tour. Subsequently, the sound staged the massive Mighty Crown 25th Anniversary/20th Reggae Sai Anniversary concert in Yokohama, Japan over the summer. Attracting thousands of fans, the event featured Japanese Reggae acts and very special guest Beenie Man, who defeated illness to be present. Fresh off the heals of the colossal concert, “The Far East” Rulaz sunk all competition (including Tony Matterhorn, Fire Links an King Turbo) by winning the “Sound Clash at Sea” aboard the famed Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise. And the powerhouse sound capped off anniversary celebrations with the grand finale “Champions in Action” concert just this month.
Throw in “Anniversary” DVDs, the special edition “Crown Jugglaz” CD box set and highly rated mixes (included one for the Grammy-nominated Raging Fyah, which landed in Large Up’s Top 10 Caribbean mixes of 2016) and you’ve got more than a “shiny” musically rewarding year for the sound, who rose to fame after their groundbreaking 1999 World Clash victory. As if 2016 couldn’t get hotter for Mighty Crown, the thriving sound opened the ‘UNDER INFLUENCE’ store in Japan, which is stocked with their Nine Rulaz and Irie Life clothing brands, music, memorabilia and other special Mighty Crown releases. Fans travel from around the world to the store to get merchandise and autographs if they get lucky.
Mighty Crown continues to embrace and promote sound system culture. From their Money Pull Up tour and high profile performance dates through out the year, produced by management team Irish and Chin, Mighty Crown stays in the limelight. One thing for sure, Mighty Crown has become one of the industry’s most commercially successful sounds.
