Couture Africa: Tell us a little about yourself?

I have been a hair stylist for more than 10 years now. I have won 3 awards so far; Bridal Stylist of the Year 2014/2015 Natural Hair Stylist of the year 2015.

Couture Africa: Did you always want to be a hair stylist?

No, not really. I wanted to be a fashion designer.

Couture Africa: What is the hardest/best part of being a stylist?

The hardest is dealing with those clients who look down on you and those that do not honour appointments. The best part is the satisfied clients, those that appreciate my work.

Couture Africa: What are your favourite hair tools?

A crotchet hook, scissors, a weaving needle and a tail comb.

How did you find out about AHA?

My friend told me about it and encouraged me to register.

Couture Africa: What is the most memorable moment from your AHA journey?

That would be when I won the award.

Couture Africa: Has winning AHA had an impact in your life and career?

“Winning the award for me has greatly exposed me. I’ve experienced growth. I’ve gotten more clients. Confidence has increased on both ends (my side and the clients’ side). I’ve had to work hard to be better.

Couture Africa: What advice would you give the 2016 competitors?

They should know that it isn’t all about winning. It is also about inspiring others. As long as we do this, we’re all winners. You meet other hairdressers, you learn a lot, it makes you confident and it makes you face your fears.

Couture Africa: What advice would you give anyone thinking of becoming a hairstylist?

If you have the passion for it, you should definitely go for it.

Couture Africa: What is next for you?

Great things are in store from me. I’ve been helping other (hairdressers) to nurture and showcase their talents. To follow, check out my IG page @jpraiseomondi
