If you have been to the beautiful island of Jamaica, which I know most of you have been virtually if not physically, then you pretty much have an idea about the sound system culture; Jamaican politicians use it to attract tourists, the huge crowd turn up to the transformed streets, the sound system DJs cross down the streets, energy drinks, MCs, dubplates and dancehall carry the night.

After playing with ‘Roots Inity Promotions’ for four years, in 1984 Papa Bingi got together with three of his brothers and three brethren’s and formed ‘Dread Brothers Promotions and Shashamane International. This weekend, Papa Bingi will be watching from the sidelines perhaps as his generals rock the stage on the 32nd anniversary party of the soundsystem that coincides with the Romain Virgo Soul Provider Tour.
This weekend in Nairobi just like every week, across Jamaica, car parks and streets are transformed, the KICC will be transformed too. The cars will take second place to vast stacks of speakers, MCs will bring the commentary and the sound system selectors will make sure you stay up on your feet all night long before the main act, Romain Virgo seals the deal. Kenya is experiencing a soundsystem renaissance of its own.
